The Wildlife of the Falkland Islands

Photography by Mike Cullis ARPS, DPAGB

Remote, windswept and not easily reached, the Falkland Islands are a true commitment - long haul travel, RAF flights, small inter-island aircraft, rough tracks and long days in the field. The weather can be unforgiving, coldwind driven and ever changing.

Yet it remains the most extraordinary wildlife destination I have ever visited. Here, animals live entirely on their own terms. Penguins, elephant seals, and vast colonies of seabirds go about their lives undisturbed, unafraid and indifferent to human presence.

To witness such raw, unguarded behaviour, and to photograph it in this dramatic elemental landscape is both a privilege and a humbling experience. The Falkland Islands is not simply a place to visit; it is a place you feel!

I have organised the images taken into sections. These represent some of the most memorable encounters of my time there.
